From its inception in mid-2022 through its close in December 2025, the Gender Scaling Financing Facility (GSFF) and its scale-up version (GSFF+) delivered a compelling example of how gender inclusion can boost business performance and deepen social impact across the impact enterprise ecosystem in Latin America.

Designed and managed by LeFil Consulting with the financial support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and implemented alongside trusted partners, GSFF and GSFF+ aimed at more than promoting gender awareness: these facilities sought to embed a gender-inclusive perspective into the strategy and operations of hundreds of impact-driven organisations.

While the prevailing paradigm for gender-lens investing (GLI) primarily focuses on women-led or women-founded companies, or on ventures targeting women as customers, GSFF and GSFF+ advance a broader proposition. They seek to catalyse the gender-inclusive growth and impact of any organization, by identifying opportunities to promote gender equity across teams, products, services, and operations. In this approach, gender inclusion is recognised as a cross-cutting and strategic dimension relevant to human resources, leadership and governance, marketing and sales, supply chains, and other core business functions.

A multi-stakeholder model for gender mainstreaming

Across 15 countries in Latin America, the GSFF and GSFF+ reached a diverse group of organisations: 107 ventures, 8 investors, and 4 entrepreneur support organisations (ESOs), with a wide diversity of founder profiles and sectors.

The initiative deployed a comprehensive support model combining:

  • tailored workshops and peer learning
  • one-to-one advisory and technical assistance
  • practical tools including 360° gender assessments and KPI benchmarks
  • financial support through grants, blended finance instruments, and impact-linked deals.

Through this multi-faceted approach, the supported organisations were able to identify, prioritize and implement concrete initiatives to enhance gender inclusion across a variety of intervention areas (e.g., gender-balanced hiring, gender-sensitive product/program design, gender-inclusive selection of suppliers, etc.). This pragmatic approach carries strong transformative potential: by seeing first-hand the benefits that even small-scale initiatives can generate, most ventures started to realise that more was needed to drive growth and impact. As a result, many pushed beyond the initial scope facilitated by our efforts, and embraced gender mainstreaming as a core part of their DNA and mindset.

Measurable progress across business and social impact metrics

GSFF tracked 5,300+ data points across 37 KPIs to capture both organisational transformation and performance outcomes among participating social ventures. The results are striking, given that they are yearly averages across the ventures’ portfolio:

  • +42% increase in earned revenue attributable to gender initiatives
  • +77% growth in end beneficiaries reached
  • +22% rise in women’s representation in staff and +27% in leadership roles
  • +19% improvement in staff satisfaction, alongside a ~20% reduction in turnover
  • For every USD 1 invested, ventures generated USD 42.8 in incremental revenue.

Overall, these findings represent compelling evidence of the extensive benefits of gender mainstreaming for a wide range of organisations. For more detailed results, you can access LeFil’s full findings.

A lasting contribution to the ecosystem

The legacy of GSFF and GSFF+ includes a suite of open-source resources – including organizational gender assessments, online training modules, case studies, “plug & play” learning and training curricula, gender KPI benchmarking and selection tools, all designed to provide easy “entry doors” to the topic, for ventures, investors, and ESOs alike.

Beyond tools, this work led to the establishment of r.rise, a network of local, vetted gender experts across Latin America that remains active post-program, and who keep offering streamlined, affordable, hands-on support services to help ecosystem partners design and implement gender-inclusive practices, in a context-relevant and cost-effective way.

Looking ahead

As these efforts formally conclude, the evidence-backed case for gender mainstreaming – not just as a compliance requirement or ethical imperative but as a true performance lever, only got stronger. By demonstrating that gender inclusion drives business resilience, market reach, and organisational health, GSFF has helped shift the narrative: gender is not an add-on, but a strategic accelerator for impact ecosystems worldwide.

In the process, we also have landed a strong blueprint for replication. With foundations laid in LatAm, plans are underway to adapt and scale this approach to Africa and the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) regions in the coming years.
